Choosing a platform to build and host your website on can feel very daunting, especially if you have little or no experience in using any of them before. We understand that not everyone can afford to have a bespoke website built for them and would rather ‘DIY’ their own website using a pre-made website template.

We have put together a list of pros and cons for each of the most popular website platforms, to help you decide which one is best for you.

WordPress

WordPress has become a very popular platform over the past decade. It is a go-to for both website agencies and individuals who are looking to build and manage their own website.

The positives of WordPress are that it is a platform built with usability in mind, meaning that, after the initial build and set-up, it is easy for clients to update going forward. Another positive is that there are many different designs and templates that are easy to populate, giving you an ‘out of the box’ website.

However, we see many badly constructed websites because of these ‘out of the box’ websites, that are very difficult to manage going forward. WordPress does also have some minor challenges when it comes to speed and Google success.

Joomla

Joomla is our preferred platform at Clickingmad. In our experience, it is very secure, very fast and very flexible in terms of what you can do with the platform. We can make it do pretty much anything we want in terms of website design. Google also loves websites made on Joomla. We may be biased, as one of our team members wrote the manual - so we know it’s good!

Drupal

Drupal is a straight forward platform to summarise. The positive is that it has a good open course CMS system. However, it has seen a decline over recent years due to it being difficult for clients to update without needing assistance from an agency.

Wix and Squarespace

These ‘DIY’ platforms are fine to use for a first time website, but aren’t a serious alternative to a bespoke built website by a professional. They may seem cheap on the surface, but you need to pay for many additions to make it run how you would want it to.

These platforms are good for making a start with ecommerce, but have many restrictions for further development. There are also GDPR issues to consider, as the data may be stored in other countries.

What are the benefits of using a website agency?

Unfortunately, all of the cheaper alternatives to using a website agency and building your website yourself using a basic platform like those we have discussed above, come with built-in issues. They may be an option if you have a low budget, are relaxed about the results you gain from your website and having a great website isn’t a priority for you.

By using a website agency like Clickingmad to design, build and maintain your website means you gain the following benefits:

  • Slick website design
  • User optimised website
  • SEO friendly
  • GDPR compliance
  • Security and hosting looked after
  • Frequent updates to content and software
